Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate in the Duke paid-for pack, store and shipping program?

If you are an undergraduate or graduate/professional student who lived in a residence hall or on-campus apartment for the spring 2020 semester, then you are eligible to participate in this program. This includes students who are currently living on campus.

Do I have to pay for shipping?

Duke will pay for any storage costs. Duke will pay for a limited number of items/boxes to be shipped: four boxes for all students; fifteen boxes for graduating seniors. Students can pay for additional boxes and items that cannot be boxed to be shipped.

What Duke campus does Handled serve?

West Campus

Can I ship some items home and have some items go into storage?

Yep! At checkout you can select if you want items shipped home or safely stored in our secure, local warehouses. Please fill in the input boxes with as much detail as possible.

Will my medications be packed?

No. All medications will be given to Duke University Pharmacy for storage. The Pharmacy staff will keep record of all prescription and non-prescription medications. Students will be able to retrieve their medication in the fall. This resource has been created because prescription medications cannot be shipped or stored.

How do I know the movers are packing the right stuff?

Handled seeks to help make students and parents feel at peace about their items being packed. We train our crews to take pictures of the rooms they are packing, and stay in close contact with them throughout the process. You will be sent the pre and post packing pictures. We believe that taking this extra step provides further reassurance for students that their items are being accurately and thoughtfully managed. You will also be notified what day and time frame your room will be packed. We ask that you are available during that time frame. You will receive a video conference call once the packing team is in your room.

If I have a roommate, how do I make sure you don’t pack their belongings?

When you book, at checkout, you can let our team know which side of the room you are on, an inventory list of your items or any special instructions. The more details the better! If you forget something, don’t sweat it. Leading up to the move day, you can reach out to our concierge team to update any instructions. Onsite crews will have detailed packing instructions along with the information you filled out at checkout. In addition, crews will upload pre and post packing photos for your review.

How are you preparing for COVID-19?

Handled takes the health of our staff, service partners, and customers very seriously. We are monitoring COVID-19 closely and in contact with each supplier in our nationwide network regarding containment and possible impact on services.

Can I videoconference the movers while they are onsite?

Crews will have your phone number to call when they are packing your room. Prior to your pack/move date, we will notify you approximately what time the crew will be in your residence hall. Please be available during that given time frame and you will receive a video conference call. Also, rest assured that each crew member has detailed packing documentation and will be uploading pre and post pack pictures for you to review.

Can I access my items in storage?

Due to social distancing and security, we prefer that you do not access items while in storage. If you need access, please reach out to campusmoves@handled.com and we will be sure to help.

Is the storage safe?

Our partner’s warehouse is local, secure, professionally managed and environmentally controlled.

What if I don’t know my drop-off address or drop-off date?

No problem. At checkout, you can select “I don’t know my drop off address yet” and our team will follow up at a later date to confirm your drop off address.

Will I get confirmation that my items were packed?

Yes! We have a dedicated move manager who oversees the crew on move day. You will be notified after your items are successfully packed and stored in the warehouse or shipped to you.

How long does it take to ship my items home?

After packing your items, we will invoice you for any additional shipping charges and generate the shipping label once that invoice is paid. We try to schedule the pickup of your boxes as quickly as possible with FedEx and all shipments are sent via FedEx ground shipping which tends to take 3-7 business days to deliver based on your distance from the school. We will keep you updated on the status of your shipment so you can rest assured that your items are on the way home.

How long does it take to ship my items home?

Can I ship internationally?

Yes, if you want items shipped internationally, please reach out directly to our concierge team with the address and zip code (if applicable). Concierge will provide you a quote in case your number of boxes exceeds the Duke covered amount. There are some countries that we are not able to ship to: list of countries. We apologize if you wanted items shipped to one of these locations. We’re here to help. Potential solutions:

• Keep your items in storage for free until you get back to campus
• Have the items shipped to a friend/relative in a permitted state/country
